Throughout a typical work day, we are often faced with choices. Some are more difficult than others, but most are ours to make. In the technology industry, those choices can be presented in rapid fire and from all directions.
I recently had a conference call where the call moderator and a group of colleagues were upset about a recent security decision that impacted their work. Although I was probably one of the least senior people on the call, I was the only one that had any influence on the path forward for those that were impacted. It was a moment of fear and a moment of power all wrapped into one. Oh, did I mention that I was driving?
While not the safest decision (driving while talking), I made another decision that changed the course of my day. I choose to take charge of the situation. Not in a disrespectful manner, but in a way that was purposeful and clear. Every question was answered, every challenge was checked. I had never felt so empowered in my life. Looking back, I had a choice. What type of attitude would I bring to this call? Will I sit in silence, would I wait for others to weigh in, will I talk in circles like I always do? For this situation, I choose to speak and lead with passion while listening with compassion – the result, perhaps I will never truly know what was said behind my back, but on the surface, the message was received and a crisis was averted….. At least for a few days.
We all have a choice regarding our attitude. In the world of technology leadership, it is important to note that your attitude toward any given situation can be the difference between success and failure. There are many battles to fight, and while you may not be able to win them all, your attitude can give you victory even when there was no hope for one. How will you go into your next battle? Go and get your victory today!
